Orthworm in Pokemon Champions: Stats, Best Moveset & How to Get
Orthworm is a dedicated physical wall in Pokemon Champions built around a colossal 145 Defense and the ability Earth Eater, which turns the format's many Ground-type attacks into free healing. As a pure Steel-type it resists a huge slice of the metagame, making it a reliable hazard setter and pivot. This guide covers Orthworm's stats, type matchups, abilities, best moveset, an SP spread, its role in Regulation M-A doubles, and how to get it.
Base Stats
Orthworm's identity is its 145 Defense, one of the highest in the format, backed by a usable 85 Attack so it isn't passive. The special bulk is the weak point — 70 HP and only 55 Special Defense mean special attackers cut through it, so it wants to be facing physical threats. The 65 Speed is low, which is fine for a defensive piece and even useful under Trick Room.
| Form | HP | Atk | Def | SpA | SpD | Spe | BST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orthworm | 70 | 85 | 145 | 60 | 55 | 65 | 480 |
Type Matchups
Abilities
- Earth Eater — absorbs Ground-type moves and heals instead of taking damage. As a Steel-type Orthworm would normally be neutral to Ground; Earth Eater flips that common offensive type into a free recovery source, which is exceptional in a format full of Earthquake and Earth Power.
- Sand Veil — raises evasion in a sandstorm. Situational; only relevant on sand teams and generally outclassed by Earth Eater.
Best Moveset
Orthworm wants to support the team and grind out physical attackers rather than sweep:
Defensive hazard setter
- Stealth Rock / Spikes — entry hazards; its bulk gives it the time to set both.
- Iron Defense — pushes its already-huge Defense into near-unbreakable territory.
- Body Press-style scaling comes from Iron Head + High Horsepower for STAB and coverage.
- Protect — doubles staple to stall and scout.
Coverage
- Earthquake / High Horsepower — Ground coverage (Earthquake is spread; High Horsepower is single-target and ally-safe).
- Earth Power — special Ground option off its lower Special Attack.
- Rock Slide — spread flinch chance in doubles.
- Coil — boosts Attack, Defense and accuracy for a bulky offensive set.
It also has access to Flash Cannon, Bulldoze, Helping Hand, Substitute and Tera Blast.
Suggested SP Spread
With the Champions SP system (66 points, max 32 per stat), Orthworm wants to shore up its glaring special bulk: invest in HP and Special Defense so it isn't a one-dimensional physical wall, with a defensive Stat Alignment. A more offensive Coil set can put points into Attack instead. Build the exact Level 50 spread in the team builder.
Competitive Role in Regulation M-A
Orthworm is a physical wall that thrives in a Ground-heavy metagame. Earth Eater means the most common physical spread move in the format — Earthquake — actually heals it, letting it sit between attackers like Garchomp, Excadrill and Krookodile and wear them down. Its pure Steel typing layers on resistances to Fairy, Rock, Dragon and more, so it pivots into a wide range of hits. The role is support: set hazards, use Iron Defense to become near-unbreakable, and chip with Iron Head while staying healthy. Its weakness is obvious — special attackers, and Fire and Fighting coverage, blow past its thin special side — so it pairs best with a partner that handles special threats. As a defensive backbone for balance teams, few Pokemon stonewall physical Ground offense as completely.
Evolution Line
Orthworm does not evolve and does not Mega Evolve — it is a standalone single-stage Pokemon.
