Hippowdon in Pokemon Champions: Stats, Best Moveset & How to Get

Hippowdon is the format's premier sand setter in Pokemon Champions. With Sand Stream, it summons a sandstorm the moment it enters, and its huge 108/118 physical bulk plus Slack Off recovery let it stick around to keep the weather up. It is a defensive Ground-type anchor that supports sand-abusing partners while still threatening real Earthquake damage. This guide covers its stats, type matchups, best moves, an SP spread, its role in Regulation M-A doubles, and how to get it.

Base Stats

Hippowdon is built like a wall: 108 HP and 118 Defense make it extremely hard to break physically, backed by 112 Attack that hits surprisingly hard for a defensive Pokemon. Its weak spots are 72 Special Defense and a slow 47 Speed, so special attackers get through and it almost always moves last — which is fine for a supportive pivot but means it appreciates Trick Room or Tailwind teammates.

Abilities

  • Sand Stream — summons a sandstorm on entry that lasts five turns (longer with Smooth Rock). This is the build-around ability: it chips non-Rock/Ground/Steel Pokemon each turn and powers up sand abusers and Sand Force partners.
  • Sand Force — boosts Ground, Rock and Steel moves by 30% in a sandstorm. Self-synergistic with its own weather, but most builds run Sand Stream so the weather is guaranteed.

Best Moveset

Hippowdon's job is to set sand and stay healthy while pitching in damage. For Regulation M-A doubles:

Defensive sand setter

  • Earthquake — spread Ground STAB; pair with a Flying or Levitate ally to avoid your own side.
  • Slack Off — reliable recovery that keeps Hippowdon (and its weather) on the field.
  • Yawn — soft disruption that forces switches or threatens sleep, great into setup.
  • Protect — stall a turn, scout, and let the sandstorm tick.

Bulky utility

  • Stealth Rock — chip support for longer games.
  • Stone Edge or Rock Slide — Rock coverage that pairs with sand's Special-Defense boost on Rock-types.
  • Roar — phaze setup sweepers; High Horsepower as a single-target Ground option.

Other tools include Earth Power, Crunch, Superpower, Whirlwind-style phazing via Roar, Weather Ball (Rock in sand) and Tera Blast.

Suggested SP Spread

With the Champions SP system (66 points, max 32 per stat), Hippowdon patches its one soft defense:

  • Defensive setter: heavy HP, then pour into Special Defense to cover its weak side, with a defensive Stat Alignment (boost a defense, lower Speed).
  • Bulky attacker: some Attack for stronger Earthquakes while keeping the bulk that lets it reset sand repeatedly.

Competitive Role in Regulation M-A

Hippowdon is the glue of a sand team. Sand Stream guarantees the weather without spending a turn, and its 108/118 physical bulk plus Slack Off mean it can reset sand again and again across a long match — something a frailer setter simply cannot do. Yawn and Roar give it proactive disruption against setup, and Earthquake keeps it from being passive.

Its slow Speed makes it a natural fit under Trick Room, and its sand chips opposing Pokemon that lack Rock, Ground or Steel typing while raising the Special Defense of any Rock-type ally. The main weakness is the special side — Water, Grass and Ice attacks punch right through its thin 72 Special Defense — so it wants partners that pressure those threats while it holds down the weather.

Evolution Line
