Avalugg in Pokemon Champions: Stats, Hisuian Form & How to Get
Avalugg is the bulkiest physical wall the Ice type has to offer in Pokemon Champions, with a colossal 184 Defense behind 95 HP. The base form is pure Ice with Sturdy for guaranteed survival, while Hisuian Avalugg trades a slice of defensive purity for Ice/Rock typing, Strong Jaw and harder physical offense. This guide covers both forms, plus stats, matchups, best moveset, an SP spread and how to get it.
Base Stats
Avalugg's 184 Defense is one of the highest physical-defense numbers in the entire format, paired with a solid 95 HP and a strong 117 Attack. The catch is its dismal 46 Special Defense and 28 Speed — special attackers cut straight through it, and it moves nearly last. Hisuian Avalugg nudges Attack to 127 and Speed to 38 with Strong Jaw, leaning further into being an offensive tank rather than a pure wall.
| Form | HP | Atk | Def | SpA | SpD | Spe | BST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avalugg (Own Tempo) | 95 | 117 | 184 | 44 | 46 | 28 | 514 |
| Avalugg (Strong Jaw) | 95 | 127 | 184 | 34 | 36 | 38 | 514 |
Type Matchups
Abilities
- Sturdy (both) — guarantees Avalugg survives any single hit from full HP. On a wall this tough, that means it almost always lives to use Rapid Spin, Recover or a support move.
- Own Tempo (Avalugg) — immunity to confusion; a minor safety net.
- Ice Body (both) — passive HP recovery in hail/snow.
- Strong Jaw (Hisuian Avalugg) — boosts biting moves like Crunch and Ice Fang, sharpening its offensive tank role.
Best Moveset
Physical wall (base Ice)
- Recover — reliable healing that lets that 184 Defense win long-term.
- Body Press-style pressure via Iron Defense — stack Defense, then turn it into damage.
- Avalanche or Ice Beam — Ice STAB; Avalanche hits hard after taking a hit thanks to the low Speed.
- Wide Guard — blocks spread moves like Rock Slide and Heat Wave, a premium doubles support tool.
- Rapid Spin — hazard removal plus a small Speed boost.
Offensive tank (Hisuian, Strong Jaw)
- Crunch — Strong Jaw-boosted coverage that punishes Ghosts and Psychics.
- Stone Edge / Rock Slide — Rock STAB; Rock Slide is the doubles spread option.
- Ice Beam / Avalanche — Ice STAB.
- Earthquake or High Horsepower — Ground coverage; High Horsepower spares your ally.
- Protect — doubles staple for scouting and stalling.
Other tools in its learnset include Curse-style setup, Iron Head, Superpower, Bulldoze, Roar and Tera Blast.
Suggested SP Spread
With the Champions SP system (66 points, max 32 per stat), Avalugg has an obvious problem to solve: its garbage Special Defense. Dump HP and Special Defense, then run a defensive Stat Alignment that lifts a defensive stat while lowering Speed (it wants to move last anyway). A Hisuian offensive tank can instead pour points into Attack. Tune the exact numbers in the team builder.
Competitive Role in Regulation M-A
Avalugg's niche is being a physical brick wall that virtually no physical attacker can two-shot. Sturdy plus 95/184 bulk means it reliably sponges Earthquakes, Close Combats and priority, then answers with Wide Guard, Rapid Spin or chip from Avalanche. Its glaring weakness is the special side — any Fire, Steel or Fighting special move tears it apart — so it wants a special wall as a partner. Hisuian Avalugg plays differently: Strong Jaw and Ice/Rock STAB make it an offensive tank that trades safety (those 4x Fighting and Steel weaknesses) for real damage output, at home on snow or Trick Room teams where its low Speed is an asset.
Evolution Line
Bergmite → Avalugg (Level 37). Hisuian Avalugg comes from a Hisuian Bergmite at the same level. Avalugg does not Mega Evolve.
